I just wanted to say hello, sorry for not posting in so long. The last two weeks have been tumultous, but I didn’t have an excuse to be lazy before that.

I spent the last week reading “Shantaram” by Gregory David Roberts. It’s definitely worth a read. The writing is campy, but the breadth of the author’s experience makes it a very good book. You know what they (I) say…you can’t ruin a good story by bad narration. I hate spoilers, so I will say no more.

Do animals have rights, of course they do. Are we justified in using animals for medical research? Debatable. But whats not debatable is that animal rights activists have gone bonkers in trying to get their viewpoint across. These people just dont get it. They dont get that technology is still far away from being able to predict how a drug will interact with a complex living system, in fact they usually fail to even predict how chemicals will interact with a simple system like a bacterial cell (as I have experienced). In the absence of any viable alternative, the next resort is to attempt to reduce the risk of administering these drugs to humans, by getting preliminary data on animals. It sucks I know, but would you be willing to risk the life of a loved one to an untested drug especially when their system is already compromised as so often is the case with say cancer patients? Now if they were to protest animal testing on cosmetics then I would support it, as long the protests did not involve any kind of violence.
In the end, what I dont get is that these activists dont even get the hypocrisy of their own actions…..kill one animal to save another? Yup, makes a lot of sense doesnt it?
