Everyone knows what a vegan is. Anyone know what a “freegan” is? Well, if you are like I was yesterday when I first heard about it, you must be going, “What the flock”? Anyway, thanks to the wonders of Wikipedia, enlightenment is only a click away.

….but not a …..well you get the idea. The NYTimes has an excellent article detailing the water woes of Indian cities and uses New Delhi, the capital, as its focal point. The point that is reiterated is one common to most of India’s problems, its not a supply issue, its a distribution and infrastructure issue.

In the business section of the same issue is this article that discusses the rapid growth of the Indian economy. The point is that sectors that involve private enterprise are booming, but those requiring government involvement are lagging. Red tape certainly is a bitch.

Read the Satanic Verses last month. The book is about freedoms - personal, political and societal. What the fatwa is wrong with that? I didn’t see anything in it that warranted author execution (this is subject matter for a rant, so I’ll leave it at that).

A theme common to most forums Rediff starts, sick/ignorant attitudes and the rampant assault on the English language.

Break into someones house, offer them sex, get rebuffed. So what would any sane person do? Well, strip naked in the house, steal some shoes and run away of course!!

Can you discern the traces of cantaloupe or the lingering aroma of sweet wormwood in your wine? If you can then the “Master of Wine” title is for you. I have no doubt about my chances in this course, three decades of assaulting my palate with Indian spices have rendered my taste buds impervious to the subtleties of wine. I can however, as I once proudly announced to my father-in-law, distinguish between red and white wines. Go figure.

Be close to extinction, have your primary food source nearly wiped out, get woken up, hugged by a drunk, bitten in the back and then doused by water. Life must suck if you are this panda bear.

“Your father is dead”. Powerful words that have been repeated on numerous occassions in India’s farming community, where farmers not able to fight bureaucracy, corruption and bad luck have been forced to take their own lives. To get a sense of the red tape that a farmer in India has to go through, read Mark Tully’s book India in Slow Motion. Think a farmer burdened by crippling debt cares much about Vande Mataram?
